Count her in: Invest in women and accelerate progress
We wanted to reflect on the gains women have made toward gender equality, and the hurdles we are still facing today. Gender equality empowers women with the ability to make choices, enhancing their careers and overall wellbeing.

Daiana Leandro, who works for Normet as a chemical coordinator in Perth, Australia, provides an insight into what the International Women’s Day means to her, the challenges she has faced in her career, and the woman who inspired her to be the person she is today. Daiana has a degree in Chemical Engineering and is responsible for the quality and safety control of products.

Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
Because it's a day to recognise and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women globally. Women fought for our rights, which some people take for granted. We should remember that we have contributed and excelled in many fields such as science, art, politics, business and many more. And it's also a day to remind us of the ongoing journey towards gender equality.
How can we persuade more women to join the mining and tunnelling field?
I'd like to say to young women who are considering a career as a chemical engineer or in any other field to believe in themselves, their abilities, and that they can do it. I know you will face challenges, but stay tuned to your path and follow your intuition. I'm a proof of concept. I studied and worked hard too. But it's totally worth it and you should never let anyone stop you.
Another piece of advice that I would like to say is to be strong, be resilient and always remember that women are amazing!
Have you faced barriers in your career due to being a woman, and if so, how did you manage that?
Yes, I have faced many challenges because of my gender since the engineering profession is mostly male dominated. In my previous job, I heard remarks questioning my capabilities. I never let these comments affect me. I've stayed true to my passion. I focused on my goals and I showcased them, my abilities, and my skills. And I sought support from mentors and colleagues and that helped me to navigate this situation.
What inspires you as a woman?
The female that inspires me the most is my grandmother. She lost her husband at a very young age and she faced a lot of hard times, especially back in the days when everything was harder than nowadays.
She was very determined in raising ten kids by herself. She was strong and resilient and she always gave me love and motivated me. She was an inspiration for my whole family.
